Flu

Looks like the flu is back and is striking many students in our school.  Please make sure you encourage your student to wash their hands regularly, as well as keep their coughs and sneezes into their elbows.   If your student is feeling under the weather, better to keep them home to give them time to get better and maybe help keep others from getting sick.

Parent-Teacher Conferences – January 25

If you didn’t get a meeting paper from me, but would like to meet, then please let me know and we’ll schedule a time next Thursday evening.

Math

We are done with our unit on telling time.  Please continue to practice having your student tell the time whenever you can.  You can also ask them about elapsed time, like “If it is 4:15 now, what time will it be in 2 hours?”  Next up, we’ll be working on place value, learning about ones, tens and hundreds.

Reading

In reading we are practicing inferring when we read.  Inferring means using the clues in the text to figure out things the author doesn’t come out and tell you.  These could be things like what a character is thinking or how they are feeling.  Inferring is a very important reading skill.

Writing

The students have finished up writing a How-To paragraph and creating a poster to go with it.  Next, the students will be writing an All-About book about something they know a lot about.

SES Science Fair

The SES Science Fair is coming on February 8.  This is an optional opportunity for students who are interested in trying some kind of experiment for the science fair.  It is open to kids grades K-5 who are interested.  If your student would like to participate, they need to get a science fair packet here at the school and return the signed portion by January 26.

Today we practiced telling time by playing a game called Scoot where students have to answer a question quickly and then "Scoot" to the next seat for the next math problem.

E-Learning Days

We had our first E-Learning days on Monday and Friday, and they seemed to go pretty well overall.  I was very pleased with how many students completed all or most of their work on their day at home.  Please remember that if you have any questions during an E-Learning Day, I can be reached during that day by email or by messaging me in Class Dojo.

Mid-Terms Go Home Today

The students will be bringing home their mid-term progress reports today.  These will be in a yellow envelope.  Please keep the papers inside and sign and return the envelope ASAP.  Thanks.

Parent-Teacher Conferences – January 25

The second trimester Parent-Teacher conferences will be held at Syracuse Elementary on Thursday, January 25.  I met with everyone in the fall, so I don’t plan on meeting with very many parents here in January.  If I want to meet with you, I will send home a schedule sign-up this week.  If you don’t hear from me by the middle of this week and would like to meet with me, then please let me know.

Math

We will be finishing up our unit on telling time this week.  This is an important skill to practice with your student, so make it a habit of quizzing your student about what time any time you see a non-digital clock.  Also, we are working on concepts like A.M. and P.M. and numbers of hours in a day, numbers of days in a week, etc.

Thanks for another great E-Learning Day on Friday

January 14, 2018

Thanks to all parents who helped make sure their students got their E-Learning Day assignments from Friday completed. Many of the students had their work done on Friday, or did it over the weekend, which is just fine.

If you didn’t check to see if your student completed their work, please do so. It helps us if we don’t have to a take a lot of class time when we come back to go over missed work.

E-Learning Day today – Friday, January 12, 2018

January 12, 2018

To find today’s E-Learning Day instructions for the students, click here.

Students will have their instructions in SeeSaw on their iPads.

If you have questions today, please contact me by email or through Class Dojo.

Enjoy your long weekend and be careful on the roads!

NWEA Testing tomorrow morning – Have iPads charged and ready

January 10, 2018

We will be doing the first part of our winter NWEA tests tomorrow morning. Please make sure your child’s iPad is charged and ready.

Also, a few students don’t have headphones or earbuds. Check with them to see if they need a new pair. We use headphones when taking the NWEA test.
