STEM Challenge – Make a Spider Web

October 30, 2015

Today we did a STEM Challenge in class.  STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.  Basically, STEM activities involve the kids creating and making things, with little input from the teacher.  The students are to decide how they are going to make their creation and how they get it done.

In this case, the students were to make a spider web.  We watched a short video showing a spider making a web.  Then we looked at pictures of webs.  I then gave the students their own page with some web images on it.  They got a glue stick, a piece of black construction paper, something to write with, and a container of dental floss.  The rest was up to them.

It was very interesting watching the students as they worked in groups of three to try to come up with what they wanted their web to look like.  Then they had to work together to make it on the paper.  It was a lot of fun to watch them work.  And great for them to push themselves to work on creativity, teamwork and cooperation.
